Mechanisms Of Compensatory Control Among College Students

The focus of research in this study is the capacity and various mechanisms of compensatory control among college students. To begin, compensatory control is one’s belief that he/she can personally foresee, affect, and navigate current and future events in their lives. Compensatory control is a belief that may affect one’s day to day life through their thoughts and actions. Human’s typically create different mechanisms for compensatory control to be used in these situations. These various mechanisms will be explored throughout this paper. As human beings, we find it essential to maintain some sense of personal control over our lives. We like to have the idea that we are in power or have some degree of jurisdiction over what does or does not†¦show more content†¦Kay, Whitson, Gaucher, and Galinsky (2008) are the original developers of the idea behind compensatory control. These researchers developed many ways in which individuals can psychologically restor e their sense of control, including the three main forms throughout this paper. These mechanisms include, 1) our minds – creating patterns where they don’t exist, 2) our institutions – supporting sociopolitical institutions, and 3) the heavens – developing a belief in an interventionist God. The three compensatory control mechanisms above each have their own ways of creating a sense of control in what happens each and every day. First, one way of creating a nonrandom world is by literally perceiving patterns in the world around us, called pattern perception. Kay et al. define pattern perception as the identification of a clear and meaningful relationship between a set of stimuli to meet the goal of reestablishing order. Individuals who feel they lack control often willingly partake in superstitions, conspiracies, and finding a cause-and-effect relationship between even the most unrelated behaviors, all of which falls back on the individuals need for struc ture in the world. Another related mechanism, government defense, is commonly associated with the system justification theory.
